Have you ever thought about what element you’re lacking and need more of?

We say that plants need more water, what about you?

And I am not just talking about physically getting more water.

Water represents the world of emotions.

A lot of people can be afraid to access & go into the world of their emotions, the world of water, simply because they didn’t grow up with it; but also, think of expressions and images such as “drowning in water” or “don’t get soggy on me”, etc. Water can be a lovely and inviting world, making us feel comforted and soothed, but it can also be a world, when there are turbulent emotions that can scare us.

If you are one of those people who are scared of the water element, we could also see it as being a symbol of beings scared of big emotions. This could be affecting many areas in your life. Let’s do a little reframing of the water symbol.

Let’s remember & try to imagine that all life comes from water. Do you remember that from Science class growing up? The first living creatures came from the water. It can represent our ancestral memory, birth (think: “My water broke” as a sign for upcoming birth). Dreams or images of water can mean there is a renewal coming. Even religions have used the power of water in their rituals for so long: think of christenings and how water is used to bathe the individual, not only physically, but as a symbol. In the Jewish tradition, there is a Mikvah, a bath used for the purpose of ritual immersion in to achieve ritual purity.

Water is just one of the four elements that I commonly work with in my therapy practice and with myself. I look for elemental images in dreams, but I also use elements as a practical framework: What do I need right now? Earth for grounding? Air for clarity and space? Water for emotional release? Fire for activation and transformation?
